My last fall semester as an undergraduate has come to a close. It's been real, but I can really, truly think of no better way to wrap it up than sitting at the 5A bus stop in Rosslyn while one man digs through the trash for food (admittedly sad), and another woman is standing twenty feet away smoking a blunt and taking the phrase "hacking cough" to an entirely new level--this coming from someone who's had whopping cough before. Definitely one of those things everyone should experience at 8pm on a Sunday.
Our flight got delayed from 10pm to 1am tonight, so we don't get in till around 1pm tomorrow. I just want to be in London, but apparently the universe has other plans.
Gonna be honest, though, I'm nervous about this trip. I'm mostly worried that the librarians and archivists won't be very helpful, that I won't be taken seriously as an academic researcher, that I'll accidentally rip a Lieutenant's log book, sneeze on the Earl of Dartmouth's papers, &c &c...you know, the usual. I'm only a wee bit concerned that I won't find what I need.
Parting words of wisdom: Sometimes, you just have to look at yourself in the mirror (or iPhone camera) and say, "You, ma'am, are a history nerd. If anybody can find Lord William Campbell in stuffy British archives, it's you... Because nobody else is going to do it anyway." That might just be me, though. Actually, I'm 100% positive it is. Whatever.
Deuces, D.C.
